The Nutter and Legg families are primarily from West Virginia.  They immigrated probably from England in the 1700's.  Since this information is already covered by the The Nutter Family Homepage all that we will do is post our direct lineage.  We will also post our direct line on the Legg Family as well.  Jerry Eden's has done a great job on his  Eden's Family Genealogy WV . 5. THOMAS5 LEGG (THOMAS4, THOMAS3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born 1789 in Wolf Creek, Monroe Co., VA (WV), and died 1880 in Leander, Fayette Co., WV. He married ELIZABETH "BETSY" NUTTER April 19, 1810 in Monroe County, VA (WV), daughter of DAVID NUTTER and RUTH COTTLE.

Thomas and Betsy migrated to the newly opening country of the Gauley River of Kanawha Valley and Betsey's father (David Nutter) followed for Betsey's mother died after the birth of her ninth child. Betsey looked after her siblings for her father. It is said that Thomas and his father Thomas and his brothers were involved in land speculation at Peters Creek. Ambrose lived on Peter's Creek and it became known as "Legg's Branch". Thomas lived on Panther Mountain where he built his cabin and farmed. Sometime later he went on a note to help a neighbor, and when it came time to pay it off, neither could and Thomas lost his farm and moved to Fayette, where he farmed and raised his family. He stayed the rest of his life there and is buried with his wife, Betsey

6. MATTHEW NATHAN5 NUTTER, SR. (JOHN HUETT4, MATTHEW3, CHRISTOPHER2, JOHN1) was born November 26, 1737 in Somerset Co., MD, and died 1811 in Nutter's Fort, Harrison Co.,WV. He married Hanna Miller.

 No one has been able to prove Matthew's first marriage in the 1760's. Since family members have called themselves "Black Dutch", it is possible that David's mother could have been a descendant of Jacob Muller/Miller who was born in Germany in 1702. Of Matthew's first marriage, there is only one known child, David, who was born in 1769. It was reported that Matthew carried his three year old son into Harrison County from Rockingham County, Virginia in 1772. Matthew went down into the Greenbrier/Monroe area where the Millers lived and left David in Monroe County. He returned to Harrison County where he married a second time - to Elizabeth Goodwin.
