Note:  We share a direct ancestry with President Andrew Johnson.  His father, Jacob Johnson, was the older brother of Moses Johnson, our great-great-great grandfather.  While many claim a relationship, it is a difficult family to prove.  Many of the members of the Johnson family are not well-off people.  In many cases, they are very poor.  Therefore, there is not large volume of records available.  Much of this information was provided by Lowell Johnson and his research...as well as the work of Hugh Buckner Johnston.  In addition, some valuable information was provided by Theodore "Ted" Johnson who we lost this year.  His loss is deeply felt by myself and those who have benefited from his wonderful knowledge and willingness to share it.

I have gone through and added many photos of gravestones and a few photos of individuals.  Most of these gravestones are either in ND or in TN and the photos were taken by myself with a few from Patricia Shields.  There are still Johnson descendants living on the land that Moses Johnson went to in the 1840's.  I met some of these family members back in 2003.  I hope to go back to Dividing Ridge, Hampton, TN in another year.  It is a beautiful part of the country.

OBITUARY FOR JAMES HARVEY STORM

Printed in Waterloo Courier, Saturday, November 2, 1907

OLD RESIDENT DIES SUDDENLY

J.H. Storm Passes Away Quietly Last Evening

Another Soldier Has Answered the Final Call

Last evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J.H. Jackson, 611 Conger street, Mr. J.H. Storm, an aged resident of the city, passed away. He had bidden his sons good night only a few minutes before his death and they had gone to their homes when his head suddenly dropped forward and he died without a struggle at 10:40, death being due to heart failure.

James Harvey Storm was born in New York state April 28, 1834. He came to Iowa in the sixties and settled in Jasper county, moving to Waterloo about twenty years ago. He served in the civil war as a member of Co. C., Fourth Michigan infantry and was faithful in his service to his country. He was married in 1864 [sic] to Miss Hester Anna Johnson, who survives with five children, all of this city, Ralph, Charles H., Edwin M., Mrs. J.H. Jackson, and Mrs. J. Rex Bryant. A private funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at 611 Conger street, conducted by Rev. H.G. Beeman of the Walnut Street Baptist church.

Deceased had been in failing health for about a year, heart trouble being the cause. He was a carpenter and contractor by profession, industrious, conscientious, and upright. For several months he had been building a new home for himself and his wife and took great pleasure in watching its progress. During the time they were staying with his daughter, and it was here that his peaceful end came. He was well known in Waterloo and many old friends and comrades in Robert Anderson post, G.A.R., of which he was a member, will regret his sudden passing.

Friends who desire to view the remains are requested to call between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2 noon.

47. NICHOLAS KEFFER8 JOHNSON (WASHINGTON ABRAHAM7, MOSES6, WILLIAM5, RICHARD4, SILVANUS3, HENRY2, SILVANUS1) was born 28 Apr 1876 in Kirkman, Shelby Co., IA, and died 25 Mar 1950 in Denison, Crawford Co., IA. He married LILLIE ANN BAKER 24 Jun 1913 in Denison, Crawford Co., IA, daughter of G. BAKER and ELLA BALLOU. She was born 17 Mar 1880 in Vail, Crawford Co., IA, and died 31 Oct 1972 in Dow City, Crawford Co., IA.

Notes for NICHOLAS KEFFER JOHNSON:

Material taken from the Manilla Iowa Centennial Boo, 1886-1986, pg. 239-40.

N.K. Johnson (Keff) was born April 28, 1876, and raised on a farm in Shelby County, near Kirkman.

His father and mother were Washington Abraham and Mary (Polly) Smith Johnson. They came to Iowa at the beginning of the Civil War. Although they were raised in Tennessee and North Carolina, they did not sympathize with the southern leaders and decided to go north. They had to travel mostly at night, so they would not be found and made to go back. They settled on a farm near Kirkman, and lived their many years before retiring in Kirkman where they both died. Mary was 87 years and Washington was 92 (actually 97) at the time of thier deaths. They were the parents of 11 children: Nancy; Maggie: Laura; Mildred, who die din childhood; John; Will; Wash; Ulp; Lytle; Keff; and Frank.

Keff was next to the youngest of the family. When still a young man, he came to the Manilla area and began working on a farm for Will Thompson. He worked for several farmers in that area as a farm hand. It was by attending neighborhood parties and attending the Pleasant Hill Methodist Church that he became acquainted with and later married Lillie Baker.

They were married at the Methodist Parsonage in Denison on June 24, 190, by Rev. Miller.

Later that summer, Keff had two serious operations. He had been injured earlier, when he and a brother were breaking horses. After a long recuperation, they purchased a confectionery in Manilla. While they operated it they lived in the rooms above it. After that, they moved to a farm north of Manilla, that was owned by Lillie's father. Homer Baker. While living there, they became the parents of a daughter, Eva, born June 13, 1907. Three years later, they purchased an 80 acre farm. Keff added some building to the farm, where he raised some hogs and Hereford cattle. Lillie had flock of rosecombed White Wyandote chickens. She sold roosters for breeding and also hatching eggs, besides selling young chickens in the fall, she also sold eggs a the store each week. One or two 30-dozen cases of eggs would be taken in and a credit slip was made according to the egg price. The credit was used along with a weekly cream check to pay for clothes and other supplies needed. It also helped pay the hired man.

Eva graduated in 1926 from Manilla High School with a 1st grade teaching certificate. She taught school until marrying Glenn McCutcheon, in 1934.

The Easter Tornado of 1913 did considerable dame to their farm buildings.

In 1918, Keff and Lillie became the parents of a son, who died soon after birth.

In 1939, they sold their farm to Everett and Dorothy Quick.

Lillie's father, Keff and Lillie bought a 200 acre farm near Dow City, They lived there for four years, but due to Keff's failing health, they rented it out and moved into Denison. Homer (Lillie's father) lived with them until he passed away in 1949.

Keff passed away on March 25, 1950, at 74 years of age. Lillie continued to live in her home until she became ill in 1966, and then lived with her daughter and husband, Eva ad Glenn McCutcheon. Lillie passed away October 30, 1972.

Following out the command of the Master, he has loved his fellowmen as himself and led a life of service, going throughout the mountainous section, helping those, not only in spiritual need, but physically as well. Dark, stormy weather meant nothing to him and many times at night he has traveled miles through rain and cold to help those in need. He served as preacher and teacher to many.

The Rev. Hazelwood was born on September 7, 1873. On Feb. 11, 1894 he was married to Miss Celia M. Goodwin, four children being born to this union, two daughters and two sons. His Christian life began very early, having professed faith in Christ in 1888 uniting with the Hampton Baptist Church one year later.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. E. E. Hazelwood; one daughter, Mrs. John Miller; four grandchildren, Dovie Pearl Miller, Edgar Miller, Mary Christine Hazelwood, Charles Hazelwood; one brother, George Hazelwood, all of Hampton.

Funeral services will be conducted from the Union Baptist Church at Carden's Bluff Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. C. L. Bowden, the Rev. Clay Wilson and Judge W. R. Allen officiating. Interment will be made in the Morton Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Henry Guinn, Donce Street, James B. Deal, Percy Campbell, Bob Campbell, Bruce Pierce, Roy Wilson and Will Sams.

The Roy Hathaway Funeral Home is directing the funeral arrangements.
