Notes for Jonathan DAVOL: On Oct. 21, 1677, Jonathan (2) Devol and 47 other persons were granted 50,000 acres in East Greenwich, RI. No evidence has ever been found that he ever settled there. Dartmouth, MA had become a refuge for Quakers fleeing from other parts of the colonies in 1664 and many of his family were Quakers. Newport, RI and Dartmouth, MA remained the ancestral location of the Devols for 150 years. Jonathan (2) had settled in what later became Westport, on land, a portion of which is still occupied by descendants. He signed his name Davel on a deed of property sold to his son Jeremiah, Feb. 12, 1712-13 and Hannah made her mark, (but in her case the name was transcribed Devill). Some time later, Hannah died, perhaps 1715-17. It is thought Jonathan may have met his second wife Martha at a Quaker Meeting (Pope p. 428). He outlived three of his sons.
